Gaibandha subdivision town was then established in 1958 as subdivisional sports club. The first elected vice-president of the organization was the late Shah Abdul Hamid, the first speaker of the Constituent Assembly and the late Dr. Mofizar Rahman was the general secretary.
The Gaibandha District Sports Association was formed on 15 February 1984 when it was upgraded from Gaibandha subdivision to a district. The first general secretary of the district sports body was the late Sachin Kumar Chaki.
The development work of Gaibandha District Stadium i.e. VIP Gallery and Pavilion Building was constructed in 2009 during the tenure of Hon'ble Minister of State for Youth and Sports of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh Mr. Obaidul Quader. At that time, according to the decision of the National Sports Council, the Gaibandha District Stadium was renamed in 2009 as the first Speaker of the Bangladesh People's Council, Shah Abdul Hamid Stadium.
Many famous players of Gaibandha sub-division and district sports body gained a lot of fame by participating in the games at the national level. It may be mentioned that Mr. Mahabub Ara Begum Gini, Moslema Begum Rani, Sultana Sahana Rebecca Lovely, Naeem Islam of current cricket team, Mahamudul Hasan in under-19 cricket, Pinky in women's cricket, Sharifa in football, Kabaddi in national athletics. Is able to take place.
The Gaibandha District Sports Association has been participating in other sports including cricket, volleyball, kabaddi, headball, table-tennis, chess, badminton and athletics at the national level every year.
Besides, every year local Gaibandha District Sports Association organizes District Athletics competitions including 1st Division Cricket, 2nd Division and 3rd Division Cricket League, Nahid Cotton Table-Tennis League, Badminton Competition, Cute Handball League, Chess League, Hockey League. In addition, the Deputy Commissioner organized the Gold Cup football tournament with the reputation of different district teams.
