In 1936, a railway ferry service was started on the river Jamuna at Tistamukh Ghat in Fulchhari upazila of Gaibandha district and Bahadurabad ghat in Dewanganj of Jamalpur district with the aim of increasing the railway communication with Dhaka in the northern part of the country. The then Railway Authority established passenger and freight services between Dhaka, Chittagong and Jamalpur, Sherpur, Netrokona and Kishoreganj districts of Greater Mymensingh district and Gaibandha, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Dinajpur, Panchagar and Thakurgaon districts of Greater Rangpur district in the north. Launches the service. From then onwards, the ghat used to transport passengers, agricultural products, diesel, fertilizers and other daily necessities in a short time at low cost. After 1990, due to the navigability crisis of the river Jamuna, the ferry service was shifted from Tistamukhghat to Balasighat.
Young people, children and teenagers of all ages are fascinated by the beautiful beauty of Balasighat. Many come to visit with their families in the morning and return home before evening. Returning with happy memories. About 6/7 km away from the city, the area of the Brahmagutra river, which is surrounded by natural beauty, is slowly becoming attractive to everyone.
The Balasighat Dam area is becoming more and more crowded with tourists almost every day except for weekly holidays. Especially in the afternoon, many people come here in groups with friends and family. On the occasion of Eid, Puja, New Year and Valentine's Day, the area became crowded with tourists. The high waves of the Brahmaputra river, the clear air and the natural nature of the river give some relief to the visitors. Visitors come here for sightseeing, boat trips on the river, walking in the crop fields between the chars and standing on the Bangladesh Railway ferry tied to the river to enjoy the sunset view on the river bank. Not only from the district town, but also from the surrounding districts.
